Jerry Jones is now immortalized in the Hall of Fame. And, the good news is he did not embarrass the Cowboy fandom in the process. In fact, other than running long he did ok, which many now judge as good as it gets. The after party has been rumored to have cost 12 to 16 million dollars, it has been called the “Mother of all parties”. But hey, he’s got Jerry Jones money.
Cowboys won 20 to 18 in a meaningless game that I must say, was not as bad as I imagined or maybe I just really missed football. I was pleased to see that the Cowboys Q.B. backups had a good game. Kellen Moore 12 of 17 for 182 yards 1 T.D. and 1 INT. Undrafted Q.B. Cooper Rush went 9 of 18 for 87 yards with a 14-yard T.D. toss. They both did well in the first pre-season game of the new season, still let’s all hope Dak, does not go down.
As for receivers, I was impressed with former Baylor Basketball player, turned tight end Rico Gathers T.D. catch in the end zone. Practice squad player Andy Jones caught 3 for 39 yards, he has the outside receiver build, he can also play on special teams and has a cheap contract. Brice Butler had 2 catches for 78 yards and looked good out there, but he also flashed some last season so he needs to stay consistent.
As for the defense, first round draft pick Taco Charlton had a very underwhelming game, so much so that some are already calling his pick a bust. However, he was only in for 16 plays and only had about 10 opportunities to rush with the rest of plays, running plays. Relax people, I know we are anxious for a legit pass rusher but give the kid a break (for now). I will admit to a little overreacting myself after Arizona Q.B. Gabbert had his way with Cowboy secondary going up 15-0 early. So overall there is a lot of work left to do on both sides of the ball, but boy that defense is a constant worry. Tyrone D.E. injured his ankle at Tuesday’s practice but it is not considered serious, let’s hope not.
Next game will be on Saturday against the Rams and we should see a lot of the starters for at least a couple of series. However, it is still a pre-season game so let’s not get too excited, I will let you know what I think next week.
