That is a fair question. The person asking the question would answer their own question with a simple, “By a lot.” I got the question many times when I was running for office.
If you are a Democrat challenging a Republican, or a moderate Republican challenging an incumbent conservative Republican, well you might as well do rain dances and hope that votes fall from the sky. There are two reasons why Democrats find it hard to get elected, one, is that people really do vote Republican, two, is that districts have been gerrymandered to elect Republicans. Another reason is that the Texas Democratic Party really does not have its act together. It has lost its mastery of fighting political skills. Democrats cannot get elected unless running in a safe Democrat district of which there are few.
But there is hope. Latinos are elected to many offices in the Metroplex, some in districts that are heavily Republican. Many people have declared themselves candidates. Won’t really know who is running until filing date. So far, Beto O’Rourke, running against Ted Cruz is making a lot of noise. Reminiscent of Victor Morales. Way to Go Beto!!! Locally Janet Lynn Sanchez running against Smokey Joe has made the most noise. It is time for Smokey Joe to sit down.
There are bond elections and a couple of minor political elections. It is the bond elections that are important. Folks, this is your money that is in play. Learn what the bond money is for and raise your voice. If you want better schools, this is how you get them. Don’t trust politicians to think for you. Learn where the money is going. Then VOTE!!!
